Description

Flowerhorn Cichlid – Super Red Magma (SRM)

Overview:
The Super Red Magma (SRM) is a fiery strain of Flowerhorn bred for its lava-like red intensity and dense pearling patterns. Compared to the Super Red Dragon (SRD), the Magma line often shows more complex pearl distribution, giving it a “molten magma” appearance. It is prized for its dramatic contrast between glowing red coloration and heavy metallic pearling.

Origin:
Developed in Thailand and Malaysia, the SRM came from selective breeding of Super Red Dragon lines, with emphasis on thicker pearl patterns and deeper coloration.

Feeding:

  • Staple Diet: High-quality Flowerhorn pellets (growth + kok + color enhancer).

  • Boosters: Freeze-dried shrimp, krill, and bloodworms for red saturation.

  • Supplements: Spirulina-based and carotenoid-rich foods to maintain the “magma glow.”

Tank Mates:

  • Best kept solo due to high aggression.

  • Only possible with robust dither fish or in large partitioned tanks.

Aggression Level:
Very High. SRM are highly territorial and interact aggressively with reflections or keepers.

Experience Level:
Intermediate to Advanced. Needs careful care, proper diet, and stable tank conditions.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 78–84°F (25–29°C)

  • pH: 7.2–8.0

  • Hardness: 8–20 dGH

  • Minimum Tank Size: 75–100 gallons per adult fish.

Unique Features:

  • Coloration: Fiery lava-red body with gradients from deep crimson to glowing orange-red.

  • Pearling: Dense, scattered pearling resembling molten lava cracks — more dramatic than SRD lines.

  • Head (Kok): Prominent, rounded kok with strong genetic potential for growth.

  • Body Shape: Thick, muscular build with wide shoulders and flowing dorsal/anal fins.

  • Rarity: Less common than the SRD, making it highly desirable among collectors.

✨ The Super Red Magma is often considered the “lava version” of the Super Red Dragon, with heavier pearling and fiery tones. It is a show-quality Flowerhorn favored in competitions and by collectors who want a fish with both intensity and dramatic contrast.
