Zebra Apple Mystery Snail (Asolene spixi)

Overview:
The Zebra Apple Mystery Snail is an attractive freshwater snail known for its distinctive dark zebra-like striping across a golden or brown shell. Active and fascinating to watch, this snail adds both visual interest and natural cleaning benefits to freshwater aquariums.

Origin:
Native to South America, particularly Brazil, Asolene spixi inhabits slow-moving rivers, streams, and wetlands where it feeds on algae and organic matter.

Feeding:
Omnivorous scavenger. Feeds on algae, leftover fish food, plant matter, and sinking pellets. Supplement with algae wafers, blanched vegetables (such as zucchini or spinach), and snail-specific foods for optimal health.

Tank / Setup Requirements:

  • Minimum tank size: 20 litres (5 gallons)

  • Provide stable water conditions and plenty of surfaces for grazing

  • A secure lid is recommended as snails may explore above the waterline

  • Calcium-rich water helps maintain strong shell growth

Tank Mates:
Suitable for peaceful community aquariums. Compatible with most small freshwater fish and invertebrates. Avoid aggressive fish that may nip or prey on snails.

Behaviour:
Peaceful and active, spending time grazing on surfaces and décor. May occasionally burrow or explore the aquarium.

Experience Level:
Beginner friendly. Hardy and easy to care for, making them a great addition to most freshwater aquariums.
