Red Sailfin Goby \u2013 Exallias brevis<\/em><\/h3>\n

Overview:<\/strong>
The Red Sailfin Goby<\/strong>, also called the Leopard Blenny<\/strong>, is actually a blenny species<\/strong> despite its trade name. Recognizable for its elongated body, spotted reddish-brown markings, and tall sail-like dorsal fin<\/strong>, this fish is both striking and unusual. It spends much of its time perched on rockwork or coral, using its comb-like teeth to graze.<\/p>\n

Origin:<\/strong>
Widespread throughout the Indo-Pacific<\/strong>, particularly in coral-rich reefs from East Africa to Hawaii.<\/p>\n

Feeding:<\/strong>
Specialized corallivore<\/strong> \u2013 primarily feeds on live coral polyps in the wild<\/strong>. In captivity, it is very difficult to maintain, as it rarely accepts prepared foods. Some individuals may pick at frozen mysis, brine shrimp, or algae-based foods<\/strong>, but survival without coral polyps is often poor.<\/p>\n

Tank Mates:<\/strong>
Best kept alone or with peaceful reef fish<\/strong>. Not suitable for tanks with prized corals, as it will nip and feed on them. Avoid keeping with aggressive species that may outcompete it for hiding spots.<\/p>\n

Aggression:<\/strong>
Low.<\/strong> Generally peaceful toward other fish but territorial with its own kind.<\/p>\n

Experience Level:<\/strong>
Expert only.<\/strong> This fish is not recommended for most aquarists<\/strong> due to its coral-eating habits and poor adaptation to captive diets. Best kept only by highly experienced reef keepers with access to natural coral food sources.<\/p>\n
