Its golden-yellow to cream colorationmakes it a bright focal point in reef aquariums. This species is photosynthetic and relatively easy to keep, making it one of the best beginner soft corals. It thrives under stable water conditions and moderate lighting, and as a cultured coral, it adapts well to aquarium life.

Origin

Originally found throughout the Indo-Pacific, including Fiji, Indonesia, and the Great Barrier Reef. Cultured specimens are aquacultured for sustainability and improved hardiness, reducing stress compared to wild-collected colonies.

Lighting

Moderate to high lighting. The Yellow Toadstool contains symbiotic zooxanthellae, which provide energy through photosynthesis. Use LED, T5, or metal halide lighting, depending on placement. Under higher light, it maintains its bright yellow colouration; in lower light, it may appear pale or tan.

Water Flow

Moderate to strong, indirect flow. Good circulation helps remove mucus that the coral periodically sheds (a natural cleaning process) and keeps the surface free of detritus. Avoid direct jets of flow aimed at the polyp surface.

Feeding

Primarily photosynthetic, but benefits from occasional supplemental feeding. Allow ample space around the coral, as it can grow quite large (up to 25–30 cm across) and may release mild allelopathic chemicals that affect nearby corals.

Tank Mates

Excellent for mixed reef aquariums.
